A large pearl forms the body of this swan pendant. Such large, unusually-shaped pearls were known as "baroque" and were particularly popular in the 16th century. The naturally uneven surface and the flickering of light and shade across it created an impression of movement. Often the natural shape of the piece dictated to the master the final form - be it animal or bird - which he then finished with gold, enamel and precious stones. Here the neck, wings and tail are of gold with white and black enamel, while the swan swims in a pool of blue enamel. Such pieces were usually worn on a chain, as personal jewellery or as amulets. The fashion continued up to the 17th century.
