‘Portrait of a Woman’ by a Swabian painter Christoph Amberger, who mainly worked in Augsburg, is a companion to ‘Portrait of a Man’ (The State Hermitage). It is likely that the paintings depict spouses. The artist focused his attention on the sitter’s psychological characteristic. The lady’s image is infused with softness and restraint. The bold brushwork and subtle nuances of chiaroscuro reveal the influence of Titian who was assisted by Amberger in 1548, when the Venetian was invited to Augsburg to work at the court of Charles V. Amberger’s portraits commissioned by Charles V, Ludwig of Bavaria and the Fugger banking family were typical of mid-16th century German art.
